The American Cancer Society estimates that in Minnesota, 3,200 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, adding to the tens of thousands of women and men already living with the disease. An estimated 700 will die this year.
The lifetime risk for a woman developing breast cancer is 1 in 7.

This year in America, more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 will die.

  If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95%.

  Approximately 3 million women in the U.S. are living with breast cancer: slightly over 2 million have been diagnosed with the disease and an estimated 1 million who do not yet know they have the disease.

  All women are at risk for breast cancer. About 90% of women who develop breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease.

  The current methods of treatment in use in the United States are: surgery (mastectomy and lumpectomy), radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological therapy (including, monoclonal antibody therapy).
  Ann Harris and Lois Joseph, diagnosed with breast cancer at ages 39 and 55 respectively, started the Breast Cancer Awareness Association in 2001, drawing on their own experiences as survivors.
  The BCAA is the only organization in Minnesota whose sole purpose is to educate and support individuals, families and friends living with breast cancer.
  The first annual Twin Cities Breast Cancer Awareness Conference was launched as a part of the Day of Caring program, which has since suspended work on a national level.
  24 survivors, ranging in age from 20-93, male and female, from multi-cultural backgrounds take the stage each year during the "Sense of Style" fashion show. As survivors walk the runway, an announcer shares stories of their diagnoses and highlights of their treatment.
